SIMONE FOXLEY

A Canadian-Australian writer living in the seaside village of Ucluelet, British Columbia, Canada. With a strong affinity for nature and travel, Simone is a creative writer and outdoor adventurist. Part Sea creature, she is an avid diver and spearfisher - while on land she prefers to be surrounded by trees, camping, hiking, climbing and mountain biking. After a 20 year career in horticulture and founding a busy landscaping business, she now spends her time cultivating her love of words.

A portrait of author, Simone Foxley.

I was born with a pen in hand and an imagination that defied parameters - writing quickly became the fabric of my life. Wanderings of youth led to theatre and minor roles in film, where I fed my creative muse through script building and storytelling. A career in horticulture nurtured an affection for the natural world and led to travels from The Pyramids of Egypt to the Great Blue Hole in the Sea. Nature, travel and history have fuelled my machine, but it’s the wholesome cultivation of words that has become my greatest treasure.

My Advocacy
For Heritage Buildings

Heritage buildings provide a framework of the past. They embody a style and way of living that has ceased to exist. Conserving places of significance is crucial to maintaining a tangible view of history. They offer an opportunity to understand the evolution of architecture and the changing needs of our society.

My family’s role as caretakers of character homes:

Home has always been a work in progress. As a child, I lived in a four level row-style house, built in 1907. Father tore the walls back to the studs and rebuilt it board by board. I was fascinated by items found hidden in the walls: a cigar box of love letters, yellowing turn-of-the-century newspapers and a map of an old city, marked with an ‘x’. By the time the new walls were in place, all I dreamed of were the stories of those who once lived there.

When we set out to grow a family of our own, we were drawn to a miners cabin built in 1889. Coal has a way of settling into the floorboards, but it was the marks on the door frames from decades of furniture moved in and out that accounted for the hard working families who once called it home.

In 1912, a house was built by an unknown architect in the fashion of the time, a Queen Anne Revival. It was clad in cedar shingles with stained glass windows that filtered coloured light onto the stairs. It would pass through many hands before ours, often under threat of demolition, but its charm would be its saving grace. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work restoring it. Then one day, under the roof of its copper capped turret, I pushed my small desk against the window and began to write.

My Work
In Progress

Retreating to the darkened rooms of a forlorn character home, Clio Vaughn becomes obsessed with its preservation. When she wakes in the turret to find pages penned by her own hand, the history of the house begins to unravel.

WORDS ABOUT THE SEA

The boat creaks as it lists and twists and I soon find comfort in these sounds. The Sea shows no mercy and yet we remain afloat.

Peering through the salt stained window, she spies a red- hulled skiff with a sail just wide enough to capture the wind needed to escape from the Bay.

Salt water sips at her toes - but she retreats, laughing…then turns with a joyous burst and races full force into the Sea.

Pushing a salt crusted curl behind her ear, sand grinds in her teeth as she searches the ragged shoreline for Hope.
